DRDO gets emergency use nod




The Drugs Controller Gener­al of India (DCGI) has grant­ed permission for emergen­cy use of an anti­COVID­19 therapeutic application of the drug 2-­deoxy­D­glucose(2­DG), developed by the In­stitute of Nuclear Medicineand Allied Sciences (INMAS),a lab of the Defence Re­search and Development Or­ganisation (DRDO), in collaboration with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad.



E.U., India relaunch FTA talks, sign connectivity partnership



India and the European Union (EU) have agreed to resume discussions about a free trade agreement (FTA), eight years after the talks got stalled, the two sides announced on Saturday, along with kick-starting negotiations for agreements on investment protection and geographical indications.


India and the European Un­ion agreed on Saturday to re­launch free trade negotia­tions by resuming talks thatwere suspended in 2013 forthe Bilateral Trade and In­vestment Agreement (BTIA),as Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted virtually from Delhi with President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen and E.U. Council President Char­les Michel along with 27 Eu­ropean leaders gathered in Porto, Portugal, on Saturday.

Immediate measures needed for welfare of children’





he Supreme Court Juvenile Justice Committee, in coordi­nation with UNICEF, high­lighted the need to urgently provide care and protect children suddenly made vul­nerable by the loss of one or both parents to the second wave of COVID­19. Supreme Court judge S.Ravindra Bhat, who is the Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee, in a re­view meeting held with High Courts, representatives of States and the Centre, said concerted efforts should be made to provide interim care for children who have been orphaned, abandoned or even left unaccompanied in their own homes.


Imports of supplies from China surge



Chinese companies manu­facturing oxygen concentra­tors and other medical sup­plies are reporting a record surge in orders for April and May from Indian companies amid the current wave of COVID­19 cases and shortag­es in supplies. Since April, orders for at least 40,000 oxygen con­centrators have been placed by Indian companies, of which 21,000 have so far been delivered, along with more than 5,000 ventila­tors, 21 million face masks and 3,800 tons of medi­cines, according to official Chinese customs figures.


WHO approves China’s Sinopharm vaccine



The World Health Organiza­tion on Friday approved the Sinopharm COVID­19 vac­ cine for emergency use  the first Chinese jab to re­ceive the WHO’s green light. 
The UN health agency signed off on the two­ dose vaccine, which is already being deployed in dozens of countries around the world. The WHO has already gi­ven emergency use listing to the vaccines being made by Pfizer­BioNTech, Moderna, J&J, and the AstraZeneca jab being produced at sites in
India and in South Korea.


1980 Olympic Games gold­winning hockey stalwarts pass away


Olympic gold medallist, former India coach, Arjuna, and Dronacharya awardee Maharaj Kishen Kaushik passed away at a city hospital on Sa­turday. He was 66 and is survived by
his wife and two sons.

YouTuber Rahul Vohra dies of virus complications


Actor­cum­YouTuber RahulVohra died on Sunday at a hospital in East Delhi due to COVID­19 complications, theatre director­playwright Arvind Gaur confirmed.

Vohra, 35, had shared his COVID­19 diagnosis earlier this week in a Facebook
post.


Eminent sculptor passes away


Eminent sculptor and Ra­jya Sabha member Padma Vibhushan Raghunath Mo­hapatra passed away while undergoing treatment for COVID­19 at AIIMS ­Bhuba­neswar on Sunday.

As a doyen of stone
sculpture, he was chosen
for Padma Vibhushan in
2013.


China rocket debris falls in Indian Ocean near Maldives


Debris from the last stage of China’s Long March rocket that had last month carried a
key component of its under­construction space station fell into the waters of the In­dian Ocean west of the Mal­dives on Sunday.The re­entry of the rock­et, described by astrophysi­cists as the fourth­largest un­controlled re-entry in history, had evoked con­cerns in recent days about
possible damage should it have fallen on land, and had been criticised by the Na­ tional Aeronautics and Space Administration (NA­SA) in the U.S. for “failing to
meet responsible stan­dards”. China had rejected those concerns, saying most of the debris had been burned during reentry and that a fall into international waters was most likely.


Sabalenka claims biggest title of her career


Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka stunned World No. 1 Ash­ leigh Barty to win the Madrid Open for the first time on Sa­turday. Sabalenka was beaten by Barty in the final in Stuttgart last month but exacted re­ venge at the Caja Magica, a storming 6­-0, 3-­6, 6-­4 victory clinching the biggest title of her career.
