 Stalin takes charge



DMK president M.K. Stalin, 68, was on Friday sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Gove rnor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Stalin and 33 Ministers on the lawns of the RajBhavan.


WhatsApp drops May 15 deadline



Instant messaging applica­tion WhatsApp has said it will not delete accounts of users who are yet to accept its controversial privacy policy update on the May 15 deadline. Following severe back­ lash over the latest update to its privacy policy, the Fa­cebook­ owned firm in Ja­nuary announced pushing back of the policy roll­out by three months to May 15 from the February 8 dea­dline earlier.
“No accounts will be de­
leted on May 15 because of
this update. We will follow
up with reminders to peo­
ple over the next several
weeks,” 
a WhatsApp spo­kesperson said in an e­mailed response. The com­pany has not given any new date for implementa­tion of the policy as of now.


U.S. back to Iran nuclear deal


World powers held a fourth round of high-level talks on Friday in Austria aimed at bringing the United States back into the nuclear deal with Iran, with both sides signalling a willingness to work out the major stumbling blocks.

EU spokesperson Alain Georges Matton said outside the meeting that the experts are set to continue their discussions over solutions in working groups, while the EU is coordinating "separate talks with all participants and with the US".

RBI sets up group to help review panel


The Reserve Bank on Fri­day said an advisory group had been constituted to as­sist the second Regulatory Review Authority (RRA) which was set up by the central bank earlier this
month to streamline regu­lations and reduce the compliance burden of reg­ulated entities.
Headed by SBI Managing Director S. Janakiraman, the group will assist the RRA by identifying regula­tions, guidelines, and re­turns that can be rational­ised. The advisory group’s members include 
T. T.  Sri­nivasaraghavan (former MD, Sundaram Finance).


Nadal and Osaka take the top honours




Spain's Rafa Nadal was named the 2021 Laureus Sportsman of the year on Thursday, while fellow tennis player Naomi Osaka won the top women's honour.

Seema pins a slot for Tokyo


Seema Bisla on Friday became the fourth Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Tokyo Games by reaching the final of the 50kg competition even as Sumit Malik settled for a silver medal after conceding his final bout due to a knee injury at the World Olympic Qualifiers. Seema booked an Olympic berth for herself after a close 2-1 win over European Championship bronze medallist Anna Lukasiak of Poland, showing tremendous defensive skills in the semifinal. After giving away a point on passivity, Seema pulled off a quick take down in the first period for a 2-1 lead, which she kept till the end to earn the quota.


Arjun, Arvind qualify for Tokyo




Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh qualified for the Olympics in men’s lightweight double sculls event after finishing second in the final race of the Asia/Oceania Continental Qualifying Regatta in Tokyo on Friday.

Another Indian, Jakar Khan finished fourth in the men’s singles sculls final which offers five Olympic quotas but he missed out as a country gets only one qualifying spot from this regatta. The top three qualify for Olympics in men’s lightweight double sculls event.
