 Israel­Palestinian clashes trigger fears of a ‘full­scale war’



Relentless rocket fire and rioting in mixed Jewish-Arab towns fuelled growing fears on Wednesday that deadly violence between Israel and Palestinians could spiral into “full-scale war”.

Israel’s Defence Minister Benny Gantz vowed more attacks on Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups in Gaza to bring “total, long-term quiet” before considering a ceasefire.

Litterateur Homen Borgohain passes away


Noted Assamese litterateur and journalist Homen Bor­gohain, 88, breathed his last on Wednesday at a hospital here. Doctors attributed the death to cardiac arrest. A former president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, Mr.Borgohain tested positive for COVID­19 on April 24. He was discharged from a Gau­hati hospital after testing ne­gative on May 7. His body of work includes  11 novels and four non­fic­tions. He won the Sahitya Akademi in 1978 for his no­vel Pita Putra but returnedthe award in 2015 to protest the growing intolerance in India. He was serving as the editor­in­ chief of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta until his death.

“Deeply pained by the de­mise of eminent litterateur and veteran journalist Ho­men Borgohain,” Chief Mi­nister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.


‘WHO has not termed B.1.617 Indian variant’


he World Health Organi­zation (WHO) has not asso­ciated the term “Indian variant” with the B.1.617
mutant of the coronavirus in its 32­page document, according to the Union Health Ministry.
In fact, the word “In­dian” has not been used in its report on the matter, noted a release issued by the
Ministry on Wednesday.
It added that some re­ports had covered the news of classifying B.1.617 as a variant of global con­cern and termed the B.1.617 strain of the corona­virus an “Indian variant”.
