EU to Discuss US Vaccine Patent Plan at Friday Summit


France joined the United States on Thursday in sup­porting an easing of patent and other protections on CO­VID­19 vaccines that could help poorer countries get more doses and speed up the end of the pandemic.

European Union leaders say that in the wake of the U.S. backing patent waivers for COVID-19 vaccine technology, the 27-nation bloc immediately will start discussing whether they should join such a move.

Nasheed hurt in IED blast near residence



The speaker of parliament in Maldives, former President Mohamed Nasheed, was injured in a blast outside his family home on Thursday, police said in a statement.

"Following an explosion... Speaker of Parliament President Mohamed Nasheed has sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at ADK Hospital," the statement said.

A spokesperson for Nasheed's governing Maldivian Democratic Party told Reuters he had suffered shrapnel injuries in the attack, adding that his condition was stable.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said an investigation into the explosion was under way.

Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh dies of COVID­19

Former Union Minister and chief of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Ajit Singh passed away on Thursday from CO­VID­19 complications at a Gurugram hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on April 20, a  statement put out by his son, former MP Jayant Chaudhary, said. Mr. Singh, 82, a computer engineer by training, was one of the first IIT Graduate To enter politics.

Russia approves one-dose ‘Sputnik Light’



The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which helped finance the vaccine, said in a statement that Sputnik Light "demonstrated 79.4 percent efficacy" compared to 91.6 percent for the two-shot Sputnik V.


Taliban captures key dam in Afghanistan


The Taliban have captured Afghanistan's second-biggest dam after months of fierce fighting in their former bastion of Kandahar, the insurgents and officials said yesterday. 

Dahla Dam, which provides irrigation to farmers via a network of canals as well as drinking water for the provincial capital, was now under Taliban control, local officials told AFP.

LIC to follow 5-day work
week beginning May 10

State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will have five working days starting from May 10, since Saturdays have been declared as a holiday for the insurer.
“Starting May 10, 2021, office hours from Monday to Friday would be 10am to 5.30pm,” it added.

AAI withdraws team from WC Stage-2


The Archery Association of India (AAI) has withdrawn the National team from World Cup Stage­2 in Lau­ sanne due to a visa issue and some other factors. The second stage is sche­duled from May 17 to 23.
Secretary Pramod Chan­ durkar said AAI pulled out the team after the Swiss Go­vernment denied short­
term visas to the archers due to the present COVID­19 situation.

Sumit Malik storms into 125kg freestyle semifinal


Sumit Malik gave a series of fine performances to reach the semifinals of the 125kg freestyle category on the opening day of the World Olympic Games wrestling qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Thursday. Two other experienced Indians in fray, Asian medal­ list Amit Dhankar (74kg) and Commonwealth Games me­dallist Satyawart Kadian (97kg), had disappointment in store.
